Professor Arrested for Sexual Harassment and Criminal Intimidation of Student

A professor at a government college in Shimla has been arrested for allegedly assaulting a 20-year-old female student with intent to outrage her modesty, sexual harassment and criminal intimidation, police said on Monday (September 2, 2024).

According to the police, the victim has filed a complaint at the women’s police station in Shimla, alleging that the professor has been sexually harassing her for a long time and has also threatened to kill her if she reports the incident.

The victim went to the police and requested appropriate action against the suspect.

The police have registered a case under Sections 354, 354-A and 506 of the Penal Code, which are equivalent to Sections 74 (assault or criminal force on a woman with intent to outrage her modesty), 75 (sexual harassment) and 351 (criminal intimidation) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).

A further investigation into the incident has been launched.
