Tragedy struck early Sunday evening when two people died, including a 7-year-old girl, and several others were injured in a boating accident on the Gasconade River above Pointers Creek in Osage County.

According to the highway patrol, the boat with seven people on board was heading south when it struck a driftwood, causing the boat to collide with a rocky cliff. The boat operator, 30-year-old Reven Newbound of Owensville, and an unidentified 7-year-old girl, also of Owensville, were killed in the crash.

Four other people, including three children aged 9, 4 and an infant, suffered serious injuries and were taken to University Hospital, while one person, a 21-year-old from Bland, escaped minor injuries and was treated at the scene.

All four children were wearing life jackets, but none of the adults were.
