Antwan Glover Re-Arrested by Same Officer in Viral 2022 Arrest, Police Release Body Camera Footage

Lakeland’s police chief addressed the latest arrest of a man at the center of a viral arrest in 2022. Antwan Glover had charges dropped earlier this year after he was struck and tasered by an officer during a traffic stop. Just days ago, the same officer involved in that incident rearrested Glover.

Police Chief Sam Taylor held a news conference Tuesday afternoon where he released body camera and dash cam footage of the incident.

On Friday, Aug. 30, Lakeland police officers were in the Bon Air Street area as they conducted patrols and surveillance of known gang areas. In the passenger seat of a marked patrol car was Detective Dillon Cornn.

Cornn and a second officer behind the wheel pulled over a white Kia for failing to stop at a stop sign and not wearing a seat belt. Chief Taylor says the officer ran the license plate, which identified a woman, and Cornn recognized Glover as the driver. The chief says Corrn knew Glover had a suspended license from a previous incident.

Chief Taylor says Glover refused to obey a parking order and instead drove to his grandmother’s nearby home. The chief says while there, Glover was ordered to get out of his car 30 times and only began to obey after being threatened with a stun gun.

A 2022 video that went viral, recorded by Glover’s stepdaughter, shows then-Officer Cornn striking Glover in the back, chest and head during another routine traffic stop on West Ninth Street. Police say the use of force escalated because Glover put the officer in a headlock, but the state’s attorney dropped the charges because they could not be proven beyond a reasonable doubt.

The police chief says Detective Cornn did nothing wrong during Friday’s incident and both officers exercised great restraint.

“He obviously knew who the person was, what their history was and it was such an obvious issue that it probably had an impact on his reaction, but I will tell you that we work hard to eliminate beatings, even though it is legal, it is horrible and it looks bad on video,” Taylor said.

In response to claims that the department has a history of police brutality, the chief said, “I think it’s about certain activist groups that want to generate that narrative and they’re exploiting incidents like that. They’re using Antwan Glover as their poster child, which I think is absolutely… I mean, look at his criminal history. It’s horrific.”

Glover was charged with driving with a suspended license, having a suspended license, possession of marijuana and resisting an officer without violence.

The chief added that no complaint has yet been filed in this matter.

FOX 13 attempted to contact one of Glover’s support groups for comment but are still waiting to hear back.
