South Shore Line takes extra safety measures after pedestrian dies after train hits rail

CHESTERTON, Ind. (WNDU) – South Shore Line says it is taking extra safety measures after a pedestrian was struck and killed by a train at one of its stations earlier this summer.

The accident occurred on July 25 at the Hegewisch station in Chicago.

In response, South Shore advises that diagnostic studies are underway to evaluate safety improvements to active warning pedestrian crossings at ground level along the rail line. It expects to receive a report within 90 days and will seek to secure any necessary funding to implement the safety improvements as soon as possible.

While the study is still ongoing, South Shore officials say they have already taken immediate steps to improve safety by placing additional warning signs at crosswalks.

In the meantime, the railway authority is appealing to all pedestrians and drivers to always exercise caution near railway tracks, look both ways before crossing and remember that “a train can arrive at any time, from any direction, on any track.”
