Man charged with third-degree murder in October drug-related death

A Minneapolis man has been charged with third-degree murder for allegedly selling drugs that led to a woman’s death.

Hennepin County District Court documents identify the man as Terrell Mitchem, 28, of Minneapolis, who is accused of selling crack cocaine to the victim’s husband.

The incident occurred on October 14, 2023, when police responded to a medical emergency in Crystal. Police arrived at the residence and found a deceased female inside.

The Hennepin County medical examiner later ruled her cause of death as “mixed drug intoxication,” noting a high cocaine content in her blood.

The woman’s husband told police that his wife had been taking prescription medication, smoking marijuana and using drugs. According to the husband, his wife had asked him the previous day, October 13, to buy her “something stronger,” namely crack.

He then left the house and bought drugs, then returned and gave her cocaine, which she allegedly took. According to charging documents, the man did not identify who sold him the drugs during the initial police investigation.

The woman’s son, however, told police who the couple usually bought drugs from, one of whom was named “BD,” later identified as Mitch. The woman’s husband later told police he met BD on October 13 to buy drugs and provided a phone number associated with Mitch.

The man also pointed to a group of six people in a photo from a previous arrest, which showed Mitchem selling drugs to him.
