Douglas County Attorney says OPD officer used legal force in deadly shooting

OMAHA, Neb. (WOWT) – Douglas County Attorney Don Kleine Thursday said that the officer who shot a man after authorities served a no-knock warrant last week won’t face charges.

Kleine said Officer Adam Vail was within the law when he fatally shot 37-year-old Cameron Ford at an Omaha residence near 78th and Redick Avenue the morning of Aug. 28. Ford was taken to the hospital in critical condition following the shooting, and died shortly thereafter.

Per Nebraska law, a grand jury will still review the case.

Kleine said that no-knock warrants are served in the interest of officer safety and to prevent suspects from removing evidence.

Omaha Police gave further details about the incident at a news conference on Sunday, saying that OPD and federal authorities were serving a search warrant for firearms and narcotics — specifically fentanyl — at the residence. SWAT was there to assist due to the suspect’s criminal history.

The family of Ford gathered outside OPD headquarters earlier this week, calling for Officer Vail to be fired. Ford was a father to two daughters. They, along with about 30 others, gathered in a show of support for Ford on Tuesday night.
