Armed robbers attack travelers on Ife-Akure highway, rape woman

According to reports, armed assailants attacked travellers on the Ife-Akure highway, which led to the tragic rape of a woman.

It was gathered that the incident which occurred on Wednesday involved eight armed men who attacked two vehicles, a service bus and a passenger car, travelling from Lagos to Ilesa in Osun State.

According to Vanguard, the robbers stopped the vehicles near Osu and forcibly took valuables including cash and ATM cards from the victims.

One of the passengers, Wale, described how gunmen shot the bus driver, who was injured but survived.

He added that during the incident one of the car’s passengers was sexually assaulted.

Wale said: “The bus driver was shot but not killed. He was injured. One of the passengers in the car, a woman, was raped. Money was forcibly taken from us.

“They took all our ATM cards and told us to transfer various amounts to their accounts.

“Some of us who had escaped into the bushes alerted security officers. Soon after, police, rangers and members of the Nigeria Hunters and Forest Security Service arrived and started combing the area.

“A few minutes later they arrested one of the robbers – a man. But the others escaped. They took him.

“The driver of the bus I was travelling in was taken to a hospital in Ile-Ife where he is currently receiving treatment.”
